Call for Entries: Are You My Mother?

Are You My Mother?

This exhibition invites submissions by Kansas artists that reflect upon the question, “Are You My Mother?” Made famous in a book by P.D. Eastman in 1960, “Are You My Mother?” has many implications, from socially problematic differences of appearance to issues of identity surrounding care-work and domesticity. What defines the parenting role and what can the parent-child relationship look like? In 2012, graphic humorist Alison Bechdel re-imagined “Are You My Mother?” as an entry into her comic memoir of a turbulent mother-daughter relationship.

Are You My Mother?, hosted by the Watson Gallery at the Stiefel Theater in Salina, is organized in conjunction with the April 4-5 visit to the Salina Art Center by photographer Ashlee Wells Jackson, as part of her 4th Trimester Bodies project. The exhibition is sponsored by the Kansas chapter of The Feminist Art Project.

Are You My Mother? will run March 1 – April 30, 2014. To submit work for consideration, email images with artist bio and a brief statement to and by February 1.
